  What is a Heat Pump?   Air source heat pumps (ASHPs)  are a type of heating and cooling system that use the outside air to move heat into or out of a building. They are a popular choice for new builds and retrofits because they are energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and can provide precise temperature control.   Heat Pumps as a Cooling System   The Dual Functionality of Heat Pumps   One of the primary advantages of heat pumps is their dual functionality. Most modern heat pumps can both heat and cool your home by reversing the flow of refrigerant within the system. This allows them to be used as air conditioners in the warmer months and heating systems during colder weather.   Heating Mode vs. Cooling Mode   When in heating mode, the heat pump extracts heat from the outdoor air and brings it into the house.
